Trustly and Vroom Delivery Partner to Bring Open Banking Payments to Online Convenience Stores

Trustly

Trustly, the global leader in online banking payments and Vroom Delivery, the leading convenience industry e-commerce provider, have teamed up to bring Open Banking Payments to online convenience stores. The partnership will provide consumers with an alternative to cards by providing them with the flexibility to pay directly from their bank account. In turn, convenience store merchants will lower their processing costs paid to credit card companies by more than 50%.

Delivery Helps Convenience Stores Weather Pandemic

There are more than 150,000 convenience stores in the United States generating about $500 billion in revenue every year. A little over half of that generated revenue comes from motor fuel sales with the rest being generated from in-store sales including products like bottled water, toilet paper, over-the-counter medications, tobacco, salty snacks, candy, energy drinks, etc. In part due to their ubiquitous physical footprint, convenience stores didn’t have a tremendous need for an online presence pre-pandemic. However, COVID-19 quickly challenged that business model and convenience stores were forced to evolve.

Part of the evolution included a shift to online options to accommodate consumers who wanted or needed to stay home rather than risk exposing themselves or others to COVID-19. In addition to mobile order and curbside pickup, this included delivery options via third-party service providers like Vroom Delivery. The National Association of Convenience Stores reports, despite challenges associated with the pandemic throughout the year, two in three convenience merchants report that their in-store sales were higher in 2021 than in 2020.

Aligning Payment Options with Consumer Behavior

As its namesake rightfully predicts, consumers look to convenience stores for quick and predictable shopping experiences. But, a disconnect happens when flexible shopping options are met with tedious checkout processes. When completing online orders, consumers don’t want to be bogged down by card number entries. Instead, they want to be delighted by an experience that combines the predictability of a convenience store with the ease of modern-day technology.

Vroom Delivery’s decision to partner with Trustly will allow convenience store retailers to provide payment optionality to their customers. A simple sign-on to their online banking account will enable a quick and easy checkout and a reduction in credit card transactions will help merchants save on processing fees.

“As a leader in the e-commerce space, Vroom knows the importance of constantly innovating in its customer journey,” says Craig McDonald, Chief Business Officer at Trustly on the joint partnership announcement between the two organizations. “Trustly is proud to contribute to this by delivering a convenient payment experience that also helps Vroom retailers to significantly reduce their own costs and fraud risk.”

For a limited time, Trustly will also be co-funding a campaign offering stores’ customers on Vroom up to $5 cash back on their orders to use Trustly when checking out in order to speed up adoption. Retailers can contact Vroom Delivery for more information on this offer.
