Ohio Launches Sports Betting to Kick Off 2023

The wave of online sports betting legalization continues—the state of Ohio launched mobile sports betting at midnight on New Year’s Day 2023. The state is notorious for its sports fanatics, who have eagerly anticipated the launch for the past couple of years. 

The official launch follows a series of legislation beginning in May 2018 when PAPSA was overturned, allowing states to begin legal processes to legalize online sports betting. Flash forward to December 2021, Ohio Governor Dewine signed Sports Betting Bill SB 29 after it passed both chambers of the Ohio legislature. By October 2022, 15 mobile sportsbooks had been approved by the Ohio Casino Control Commission. Starting in November, many sportsbooks began introducing prelaunch bonus offers to bettors in the Buckeye state. 

Following Maryland’s launch in November, Ohio is the 23rd state for mobile sports betting to become legal and go live. Mobile sports betting is legal but not yet operational in three states: Florida, Maine, and Massachusetts.
